Thermal Clean Unveils Insect Inferno at Bed Bug Forum
Company Uses Innovative Mobile Insect Elimination System

Thermal Clean, working to eliminate bed bugs in Denver and Boulder, will unveil Insect Inferno, a heat-controlled, mobile insect elimination system, at the National Bed Bug Forum January 5 to 7, 2011 at the Omni Interlocken (Broomfield, CO).

“We are the only company in Colorado to use Insect Inferno, which is a mobile unit that raises the core temperature of its contents—mattresses, couches, and furniture—to kill insects and their eggs,” commented Brad Steinmetz, president of Thermal Clean. “We will demonstrate live at the National Bed Bug Forum, officially launching the system in the Rocky Mountain region.”

Thermal Clean, a Colorado company that specializes in bed bug pest control, uses heat-based cleaning to completely eliminate bed bug problems for customers along Colorado’s Front Range. In addition to eliminating bed bugs, Thermal Clean’s heat cleaning processes reduce pet odors and kill most insects and their eggs, allergens, pollens, dander, bacteria, mold, mildew, fungi, and most viruses. Learn more at http://thermal-clean.com.
The patent-pending Insect Inferno is being used in eight states currently and not only eliminates bed bugs, but also fleas, cockroaches, and dust mites. The Insect Inferno mobile trailer features an electronic monitoring system, actuators for easy loading and unloading of furniture, and a contained heat source to maintain a constant temperature. For more information, visit www.insectinferno.com.

“By using our product customers do not have to throw away household items, such as mattresses, box springs, and couches,” said Sue Westrum, president of Insect Inferno. “We have received many calls from homeowners and renters, as the majority of pest control companies recommend discarding these items.”

Focusing on solutions, the National Bed Bug Forum will educate industry experts and newcomers on the resurgence of bed bugs and provide legal, technical, and business information. Please visit www.npmapestworld.org to learn more.

“Our exterminators work with commercial businesses in metro Denver and Boulder, including hotels, apartment buildings, retirement homes, and health care facilities, to completely eradicate bed bugs and other mattress-oriented allergens and pests,” finished Steinmetz. “The National Bed Bug Forum will act as the official platform to launch Thermal Clean and its innovative Insect Inferno system.”

National Kidney Foundation Celebrates 60 Years

Subscribe in a reader

Boulder resident Signe Wheeler is celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the National Kidney Foundation (NKF). 65 year-old Wheeler, a kidney transplant recipient, competes regularly in the National Kidney Foundation U.S. Transplant Games and helped lead her team, Team Rocky Mountain, to win the 2010 Transplant Games.

Here is Signe in her own words:
I first met my friend, Pam Doverspike, out at our horse barn. I had no idea how our lives would intertwine in the most profound way possible. My dream was to ride my horse over the 500-mile Colorado Trail from Denver to Durango. During this time, I learned I had polycystic kidney disease (PKD) and that my kidneys were failing. Pam, upon hearing this, immediately said that she was there for me if I ever was in need. By the end of the ride, my kidney function had dropped to end stage. I was destined for either dialysis or a transplant. Upon my approval as a transplant candidate, she immediately applied to see if she was a match. Pam was a match and within three months, we had a very successful transplant. We both attended the U.S. National Kidney Foundation Transplant Games in Pittsburgh in 2007. Pam was presented with the humanitarian award through her employer, FedEx. She enjoyed the special recognition ceremony given to living donors at the Transplant Games. We continue in any way we can to promote organ donation and awareness in our communities, participating in kidney walks, health fair educational programs, and Transplant Games promotion. There is never any way to thank your donor or donor family enough. Only through the joy of living every precious day can mirror the thankfulness that I wake up with every day of my life.

“We appreciate the generous public support of the National Kidney Foundation over the years,” remarked Kathy Wegner, vice president of the division. “In 1950, when the NKF was founded, there were no dialysis treatments or transplants, which meant people with kidney failure had no form of treatment and did not survive. Today, individuals and families with kidney disease can often enjoy rich and productive lives.”

Through its offices nationwide, the NKF provides early detection screenings, valuable public and professional education, research for new treatments and therapies, and vital services to people with kidney disease, dialysis patients, transplant recipients and organ donors.

The need for our services remains critical. Twenty-six million Americans, one in nine adults, have chronic kidney disease and another 20 million are at risk.
“As we commemorate our 60th anniversary, we ask you to join us in recommitting ourselves to the fight against kidney disease,” finished Wegner.

To learn more and to donate to the 60th Anniversary Fund Campaign, visit www.kidney.org/60.

The National Kidney Foundation Serving Colorado, Montana, and Wyoming is dedicated to preventing kidney and urinary tract disease, improving the health and well-being of individuals and families affected by these diseases and increasing the availability of all organs for transplantation. COLORADO ANTI-TRAFFICKING EFFORTS RECOGNIZED FOR INNOVATIVE APPROACH
Embrey Family Foundation to Fund the Laboratory to Combat Human Trafficking

(DENVER, CO) November 17, 2010—The Denver-based Laboratory to Combat Human Trafficking (LCHT) announced today it has been awarded a $1 million grant from the Embrey Family Foundation to launch an unprecedented, national study of promising practices in the anti-human trafficking field. To be piloted in Colorado, the project will provide states with a critical tool to assess strengths and gaps in anti-trafficking efforts.

“We are honored to have the opportunity to spearhead this collaborative process, which will involve multiple agencies and experts. Currently, no national campaign exists to guide states, cities, and communities in addressing human trafficking,” said LCHT Executive Director Amanda Finger. “We believe Colorado is an ideal place to pilot this ambitious project. Not only is it a source, transit, and destination state for human trafficking, it also has a vibrant anti-trafficking movement.”

A decade after the passage of federal legislation to combat human trafficking, the Colorado Project to Comprehensively Combat Human Trafficking (Colorado Project) will document successful strategies to prevent human trafficking, protect survivors, punish traffickers, and build key partnerships (4Ps) between social service agencies. LCHT will conduct its research in concert with statewide leaders from multiple fields, including Dr. AJ Alejano-Steele, Professor at Metropolitan State College of Denver; the Denver Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation; Denver attorney and anti-trafficking advocate Patricia Medige; and Lauren Croucher, Human Trafficking Project Director with the Colorado Organization for Victim Assistance.

The Embrey Family Foundation champions the well-being and rights of all people by supporting programs that advance human rights, healthy communities, education, and artistic creativity.

“As a foundation, we invest in projects that take an innovative approach to critical social issues and look for systemic solutions that accelerate long-lasting change,” stated Gayle Embrey, Vice President of the Embrey Family Foundation. “We support programs that seek to solve complex social issues and believe the Colorado Project represents a paradigm shift in the anti-trafficking movement by utilizing such a collaborative model that can be replicated by other states.”

Human trafficking represents a severe form of exploitation (labor or sexual) of another human being, such as pimping, domestic servitude, and migrant farm worker abuse in fields, among many other forms. While the area of evidenced-based research on human trafficking is nascent, the crime is considered the second largest criminal industry worldwide, reaping billions of dollars in profits.

For more information, please visit LCHT’s new website, www.combathumantrafficking.org, or contact Amanda Finger at (303) 295-0451.

About Laboratory to Combat Human Trafficking
LCHT is committed to combating human trafficking at a local and global level through community-based research; awareness and education; leadership development; and collaborations. Since 2005, LCHT has trained more than 10,000 community members, law enforcement, and social service providers. To learn more, visit www.combathumantrafficking.org.

About the Embrey Family Foundation
Based in Dallas, Texas, the Embrey Family Foundation donates to non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in both Texas and Colorado. In addition, the Foundation gives larger grants around the United States for its Mission Without Borders initiative. LCHT’s grant for the Colorado Project is part of this initiative to address systemic change at the national level in the area of human rights. Denver Urban Gardens and Denver Parks & Recreation Present Flourish!

Denver Urban Gardens (DUG) and Denver Parks & Recreation present Flourish!, a community-wide event to celebrate DUG’s 25th anniversary and 100th community garden at Ruby Hill Park.

Since 1985, DUG has continued to fulfill its mission of helping communities grow, one urban garden at a time, by offering neighborhoods the essential resources for community gardens, including on-going technical expertise and support.

Residents are invited to this free celebration at Ruby Hill Park at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010. Local media and key community leaders will join DUG at Ruby Hill for a groundbreaking ceremony of DUG’s 100th community garden site.

“DUG’s 100th garden is an incredible milestone,” said Michael Buchenau, executive director at DUG. “We selected Ruby Hill Park for the garden location because of its incredible history, beautiful views and proximity to neighborhoods that can benefit from a community garden.”

Following the groundbreaking, attendees will be entertained by a cooking competition and community concert sponsored by Swallow Hill.

Local chefs from seven of Denver’s great restaurants will compete, using locally-grown, fresh ingredients and the winner will be determined by a panel of local celebrities. Participants include Bistro One, Limon, Jonsey’s EatBar, Root Down, Village Cork, Black Pearl and WaterCourse Foods.

Throughout the day, families will also have the opportunity to interact with hands-on garden and sustainability-themed activities.

Swallow Hill will host a concert of an all-star lineup of musical acts, including national singer/songwriters Patty Larkin and Lucy Kaplansky, national children’s musician Justin Roberts and local Latin reggae band, Mono Verde.

The community is encouraged to bike to Flourish! and bring a picnic lunch.

“Ruby Hill is fast becoming the cornerstone of our redevelopment of the Platte River corridor,” said Kevin Patterson, Manager of Denver Parks and Recreation. “Combining the future Gates Redevelopment Project, the Denver Moves pedestrian and bicycle trail improvements and the construction at Ruby Hill, including this community garden, will assure that Ruby Hill becomes the destination it is meant to be.”

Westminster Resident Missy Peterson Competes in U.S. Transplant Games

Subscribe in a reader

A local group of athletes who share a unique bond are coming together for an athletic competition unlike any other—the National Kidney Foundation 2010 U.S. Transplant Games. Sponsored by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, the Games are an Olympic-style competition for recipients of life-saving transplants, including kidney, liver, heart, lung, pancreas and bone marrow. Organized by the National Kidney Foundation Serving CO, MT, and WY, Team Rocky Mountain will participate in the event to be held July 30 to August 4 in Madison, Wisconsin.

One athlete from Team Rocky Mountain is Missy Peterson, a Westminster resident, who was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis at 18 months old and received a lung transplant at the age of 24.

Here is Missy’s story in her own words:

“I began the first journey of my life when I was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis at the age of 18 months. I am now 37 years old and 13 years, 6 months post transplant. Growing up with a terminal illness was really the same to me as growing up healthy, since I only knew one way of living. I was able to do everything my friends did except for the frequent hospitalizations, and my family and friends treated me like a normal child. Into my high school and college years, my health began to deteriorate and my doctors began leading me to the next journey of my life.

At the urgencies of my doctors, I was listed in July of 1996 for a transplant and received one that December.

For the past 13 years, I have lived my life doing all the things I enjoy and more than I ever thought I would in my lifetime. I have participated in five U.S. Transplant Games and one World Transplant Games, taking in a total of 13 medals. I am in training once again for the 2010 U.S. Games in Madison. One of my biggest passions and the main event I compete in at the Games is swimming.

I am a firm believer that attitude is everything, and I am living proof that you can do whatever you put your mind to. Set goals for yourself, put a plan in place, and you will achieve those goals. Life has been good to me so far.”

Held biennially, the National Kidney Foundation U.S. Transplant Games draw transplant athletes from across the country who compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in one or more of 12 sports, including cycling, golf, racquetball, swimming, tennis, and track and field events. With an anticipated 7,000 athletes participating, the 2010 U.S. Transplant Games promise to be the largest-ever gathering of transplant recipients.

More than 100,000 Americans are currently waiting for transplants of vital organs. Eighteen people die each day while waiting.

Denver Resident James Watson Competes in U.S. Transplant Games

One athlete from Team Rocky Mountain is James Watson, a Denver resident, who was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis and received a double lung transplant in 2005.

Here is James in his own words:

“I am 33 years old and am living with Cystic Fibrosis; all my life, I have had to do multiple breathing treatments a day and take many antibiotics. Five years ago my lungs and breathing were getting worse and not responsive to the medications, so I was placed on the lung transplant list as a precaution. In May 2005 I was moved to the very top of the list, since I had acquired diabetes and my lungs had not improved. On May 31 the call came at 10:30 pm that they had a donor match for my new lungs. In the early morning of June 1, I went to the hospital for my double lung transplant.

After the transplant came a lot of rehabilitation, walking, and exercise. Then I started playing racquetball again, lifting weights, but wasn’t quite ready for my real passion, ice hockey.

In October 2005 I suffered a severe bowel blockage, which required a drug-induced coma, which was a 12 day event. I was hospitalized for 23 days and lost over 20 pounds.

It took a couple months to gain the weight back and get back into the shape. I am happy to say now I am back playing ice hockey again, once a week for men’s recreational league team. I have attended two U.S. Transplant Games and the World Transplant Games in Finland.

At these games I have met many new and wonderful people who I hopefully stay friends with forever. I plan to attend as many Transplant Games as I can! “

Held biennially, the National Kidney Foundation U.S. Transplant Games draw transplant athletes from across the country who compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in one or more of 12 sports, including cycling, golf, racquetball, swimming, tennis, and track and field events. Margarita Mission 2010

My friend, Chase, called me yesterday at 4:30 p.m. and asked what my plans were for the evening. I usually have my weekends booked, but for once, I had a Saturday night free. Chase was craving a margarita--as he said,"like my life depends on it."

After we planned to meet up, my "event guru" mind went to work, thinking we could turn this into a margarita tasting evening--a quest for Denver's best. Thirty minutes later, I had named the event Margarita Mission and created a ballot for scoring margaritas--on presentation, taste, and "strength."

We began our adventure at El Camino (http://www.elcaminotavern.com/), the happening new Mexican restaurant in Denver's Highlands Square:

Jim
Margarita ordered: Rey Mysterio
Price: $8.50
Presentation: 3 (scale of 1 to 5 with 5 the highest)
Taste: 3
Strength: 3
Total Points: 9
Notes: Brilliant pink color, as its main ingredient is Prickly Pear. Predictable margarita taste and too sweet.

Chase

Margarita ordered: Bam Bam
Price: $8.50
Presentation: 4
Taste: 5
Strength: 4
Total Points: 13
Notes: Muddled with jalapeno. Great kick!

Margarita Mission Stop #2: We departed for LoLa (http://www.loladenver.com/), the trendy restaurant of LoHi. The upstairs was full, so we opted to sit at the downstairs bar, Belola. We were delighted to have a super informative bartender, Jimmy. He educated us on what exactly "coin style" is; a coin style margarita is not so sweet and made with Cointreau, tequila, and natural lime juice. He also mentioned to make sure the tequila we drink is 100% agave, because by law, tequila only needs to be made from 51% agave. The cheaper tequilas use less agave and use filler spirits. So much to learn about tequila!

Our Lola margarita selections:
Jim
Margarita ordered: Q Coin
Price: $10.00
Presentation: 4
Taste: 5
Strength: 4
Total Points: 13
Notes: One of their most popular margaritas with a great cucumber taste.

Chase
Margarita ordered: Organic Coin
Price: $9.00
Presentation: 3
Taste: 4
Strength: 3
Total Points: 10
Notes: Very light. Tequila taste definitely comes through...

It was off to Mezcal (http://www.mezcalcolorado.com/), an authenic Mexican taqueria and cantina. Mezcal, in my opinion, does have the widest array of tequilas, and Rob, our bartender, guided us through his favorites:

Jim
Margarita ordered: La Exceptional
Price: $8.00
Presentation: 3
Taste: 4
Strength: 3
Total Points: 10
Notes: It's a coin style with Gran Centenario Plata and Cointreau.

Chase
Margarita ordered: Especial Tambien
Price: $8.50
Presentation: 2
Taste: 3
Strength: 3
Total Points: 8
Notes: Pretty standard. Too sweet.

We decided to have another round at Mezcal, which I'm so glad we did, as I had my favorite margarita there:

Jim
Margarita ordered: Picoso
Price: $9.50
Presentation: 4
Taste: 5
Strength: 5
Total Points: 14
Notes: The Picoso was spectacular--with slices of jalapenos. El Camino's version had jalapeno chunks, which Chase said kept getting stuck in his straw. I could drink this margarita everyday!

Chase
Margarita ordered: Golden Margarita (coin style)
Price: $9.00
Presentation: 3
Taste: 4
Strength: 5
Total Points: 12
Notes: Flavorful and tasty!

In review, Chase's favorite was the Bam Bam at El Camino, and mine was the Picoso at Mezcal. Both of these drinks have jalapeno, which I'm going to start including in my margaritas at home!

The First Annual Margarita Mission was a success, as we did discover the top margaritas in Denver. Next year...maybe Don Julio as a sponsor?

Salud!
