Event Benefited Share Our Strength at District475
Pamalya, a new grassroots community of internationally-minded people, hosted its 5th Annual International Holidays Event on November 17 at District 475 Gallery (10111 Inverness Main Street, Ste. T, Englewood). Nearly two hundred people attended the event, which benefited Share Our Strength, a national nonprofit organization devoted to ending childhood hunger in America.
Guests also enjoyed delectable hors d'oeuvres and desserts from Russo's Kitchen & Tavern and Ya Ya's Euro Bistro, cultural dance performances, Pamalya “models” and music by DJ Nate Williams.
“Our International Holidays event was a celebration of world cultures and an opportunity for locals to mingle with members of the international community in town,” commented Gadi Friedman, Pamalya’s Founder. “We thank all the guests who celebrated with us as one big family and look forward to seeing them at Pamalya's 2012 events.”
This year’s event was special, because it was the official launch of Pamalya in Colorado. Pamalya’s vision is to transform our cultural landscape by bringing people together in an enriching and engaging environment. The Pamalya community attracts individuals who love to share and explore cultural treasures of art, food and wine, fashion, music and more. For more information on Pamalya, visit www.Pamalya.com.
The Aramaic word for “entourage,” Pamalya carries the world’s cultures forward in contemporary and consequential ways. When Israeli-born Gadi Friedman moved to Denver in 2000, he set out to build a global community in which social and cultural bonds could be formed. He began by organizing home gatherings in Denver, where internationally minded neighbors socialized, and as interest grew, so did the frequency and size of its events. Today, Pamalya is a grassroots community that organizes vibrant cultural events — from musical performances to cooking classes to “off the beaten path” travel. Pamalya also offers a dynamic web portal that allows members to connect with fellow Pamalyans, find events, measure cultural growth and exchange ideas of mutual interest. Business Quickie Lunch at EDGE: Four Seasons Hotel Denver
Subscribe in a reader
EDGE is downtown Denver's hot new steakhouse at Four Seasons Hotel Denver--at the corner of 14th and Arapahoe. EDGE Chef Simon Purvis’ career has taken him all over the globe, from Berlin to Singapore. In each city, he immersed himself in the local cuisine and developed his menus around tastes that were already familiar there. Therefore, Chef Simon sources his beef from a Colorado ranch, striped bass from Alamosa, fresh produce from farmers markets, and so on.
I had the sincere delight of dining at EDGE for lunch on June 29, sampling the Business Quickie Lunch. I was immediately intrigued with the name and found it to be EDGE's twist on the Bento Box. The price is $18, which includes the four small plates and a dessert. A phenomenal value for the gourmet meal you receive!
On today's menu for Business Quickie Lunch:
-Summer Halibut Ceviche
-Heirloom Tomato & Mozzarella, Torn Basil, Aged Balsamic
-Sesame Chicken Salad, Peanut Dressing, Crisp Wontons
-Petit Steak Frites, House Cut Fries, Peppercorn Sauce
And for dessert:
-Organic Chamomile Panna Cotta, Lemon Oat Crumble, Sweet Roasted Apricots
-Meyer Lemon Tart, Candied Kumquats, Passion Fruit Gelee
And that was just for lunch! Wish I would have worked out at the Four Seasons Hotel fitness center before.
The pastry chef even sent us home with adorable "Twitter" cupcakes, complete with the Twitter logo and bird.
Not only is Four Seasons Hotel Denver a shining new landmark in the Mile High, but it's a destination for delectable cuisine and top-notch service.
Thanks to Chef Simon Purvis and Team--and Dana Berry, the property's PR princess!

FXB Participant Chris Frazier Loses 37 Pounds in 10 Weeks
Fitness Program Accepting Enrollments Through May 18 for Next 10-Week Challenge
Denver, CO (May 13, 2011)–Farrell’s eXtreme Bodyshaping (FXB), a popular fitness franchise developed in Iowa, announced that Chris Frazier is its first $1,000 winner in the Farrell’s 10-Week Challenge. Located in Denver on S. Colorado Blvd., FXB gives class participants the opportunity to compete for a $1,000 grand prize, awarded to those with the most extreme body transformations in 10 weeks. Frazier, age 36, lost 37 pounds and 5.5% body fat in 10 weeks.
“Chris not only had a tremendous physical transformation but also gained self confidence and a new energy for life,” FXB Owner Dorenkamp commented. “We provided him with a superior fitness program, motivation, and a fun atmosphere.”
The new FXB location boasts 2,500 square feet of mat space dedicated to the participants’ workout. Fitness kickboxing classes are held on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and resistance-training classes are held Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.
Farrell’s is a results-based fitness program for participants of any age, lifestyle, sex, or athletic ability, combating obesity and developing healthy lifestyle habits. In just 45 minutes a day, six days a week, for 10-weeks, Farrell’s participants make real changes in their fitness and overall health. Participants are part of a team and have a coach and instructor to provide guidance, motivation, and accountability.
The Farrell’s program includes three essential elements:
• Fitness Kickboxing – a Taekwondo-based workout that combines rhythmic martial arts moves, including dynamic kicking and punching, and bag training to push bodies to their cardiovascular limits.
• Resistance Training – an intense anaerobic bands workout that targets “problem areas” through exercises specifically designed to sculpt, tone, and shape the entire body. These workouts turn bodies into calorie-burning machines.
• Nutrition – a well-balanced eating plan that converts food into fuel for the body. By eating six times per day, participants stay satisfied and in “burn mode” all day long.

Aspen Skiing Company Environmental Program On Target to Meet Carbon Goals
Aspen Skiing Company (ASC) is pleased to announce that the company is on track to achieve target greenhouse gas emissions goals this year as well as unveil new energy saving projects including a ban on incandescent light bulbs (an industry first), installation of a new solar array at The Sundeck, the energy efficient remodel of the Merry-Go-Round restaurant on Aspen Highlands and proactive retrofit of boilers at The Little Nell hotel.
“This year, the company has launched the most ambitious energy efficiency projects in its history,” says Mike Kaplan, CEO, Aspen Skiing Company. “I’m proud of our staff for initiating these projects and continuing to find new ways to reduce energy use.”
Meeting Carbon Goals
ASC has a goal of reducing total C02 emissions by 10 percent by 2012, on a 2000 baseline, even as the company grows. From 2000-2010, ASC was able to reduce C02 emissions from electricity use by 6.5 percent. The company is currently on target to achieve a 5 percent reduction of total C02 emissions in 2011.
“These savings were achieved by increasing automation of snowmaking and using the most efficient snowmaking guns we have available,” says Matt Hamilton, ASC’s Sustainability Manager. “We also made significant progress at the Snowmass Club through the installation of a building automation system allowing greater heating control. At Aspen Highlands we replaced metal halide lighting in the parking garage, installed a building automation system and utilized a revolving door to reduce energy consumption. Lastly we worked with staff throughout the company to identify energy waste and address the causes.”
Lighting Ban
ASC will be phasing out the use of incandescent light bulbs by the end of 2011. The company has already made significant strides in reaching that goal by retrofitting lights throughout the company – from The Sundeck on Aspen Mountain to the parking lot at Aspen Highlands. This summer ASC will spend more than $100,000 to upgrade lighting at The Little Nell, The Snowmass Club, The Limelight Lodge, D&E Ski & Snowboard Shop and Four-Mountain Sports stores and many other buildings.
ASC’s incandescent bulb ban reads as follows: “Lighting accounts for about 15 percent of energy use in ASC hotels and office buildings, and 34 percent of total electricity use in the U.S. In the last twenty years, new technology means replacing incandescent bulbs with efficient and aesthetically acceptable fluorescent or LED bulbs is possible. High return on investment from energy savings and increased bulb life means retrofits have become fiscally prudent as well. In addition, lighting retrofits help reduce carbon dioxide emissions. For these reasons, and in keeping with our guiding principles that emphasize financial success and environmental stewardship, Aspen Skiing Company has made the commitment to phase out the use of incandescent light bulbs in all facilities by December 31, 2011.”
New Solar Array at The Sundeck
ASC recently installed its sixth solar array at The Sundeck restaurant on the top of Aspen Mountain. The 2kW array, using super high efficiency Sunpower panels is accompanied by an educational display.
“Our goal was to reach the hundreds of thousands of people who pass by that view every year on the way to The Sundeck,” says Auden Schendler, ASC’s Vice President of Sustainability. “It’s just as much of an educational and demonstration project as it is a clean energy generator.”
The educational display includes information on the ASC partner nonprofit Protect Our Winters, a group of snowsports enthusiasts dedicated to mobilizing the snowsports industry on climate action.
Merry-Go-Round Remodel
The mid-mountain Merry-Go-Round restaurant at Aspen Highlands is currently being remodeled with a goal of cutting energy use by 30 percent. ASC aims to reach this goal by installing window retrofits, efficient wall and roof insulation, efficient kitchen equipment and the use of additional green materials. The $6 million remodel of the Merry-Go-Round will be complete by the beginning of the 2011-2012 season.
Cutting Natural Gas Use
ASC will cut company natural gas consumption by an estimated 25-30 percent by proactively retrofitting boilers at The Little Nell Hotel.
“This project has a great return on investment and on the environment,” says Aspen Skiing Company Project Manager, Gert Van Moorsel.
This estimated savings will keep 305-365 tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere and will also improve the guest experience. The project is currently underway and will continue this spring.
In addition, ASC will begin construction this summer on the new Elk Camp Restaurant (replacing Café Suzanne at Snowmass in 2012-2013), which is scheduled to be LEED Certified and to implement advanced heating systems with other green materials to beat local energy codes by an estimated 30 percent. A new IT Data Center at ASC will feature the latest hot aisle/cold aisle and in-row chiller technology and other green features to reduce energy consumption company-wide.

Infinite Harvest Reinvents Vegetable Crop Production with Innovative Agricultural Systems

Company Responds to Need for More Sustainable Methods of Food Production
Infinite Harvest, a Colorado-based company, today unveiled its plans to develop vertical farming as a sustainable source of competitively priced natural health food.
"Infinite Harvest is integrating technologies and developing new methods to make agriculture a more efficient, environmentally sound way of producing high quality vegetables for local markets,” commented Tommy Romano, Founder of Infinite Harvest. “The world is currently facing many food security issues and with substantial population growth, changing environments, and natural disasters, these issues will become more compounded.”
Food insecurity is on the increase, due to residential and commercial property development, adverse farming practices, and environmental and climate changes. Therefore, it will become imperative to find more efficient ways of producing fresh food, and Infinite Harvest is emerging as a leader in developing new systems based on vertical farming.
One of Infinite Harvest’s systems is a greenhouse facility, which is environmentally controlled and contained within a warehouse type structure. These efficient greenhouses can be constructed nearly everywhere in the world and can operate in almost any environment, in turn, producing fresh vegetables. Future plans will allow other crops to be grown in the system such as animal feeds and bio-fuel base products.
Built inside a recycled 40-foot shipping container, the company’s transportable greenhouse system can be shipped worldwide. Based on green building designs and using renewable energy systems, high-efficiency grow lighting, a semi-closed automatic irrigation and production system, the greenhouse container can grow crops year-round, regardless of the outside environment. Production source water, seeds, and water-soluble plant nutrients are all that is needed to begin crop production. This system also delivers the immediate capacity to begin farming in locations where traditional crop production is not viable due to climate, natural disaster, or lack of water and resources.
“Each greenhouse container operates as a controlled environment and can produce between 200 to 2,400 plants at one time, depending on the type of crop,” said Romano. “By using only 20% of the water used in traditional farming and implementing regenerative technologies, the container can operate for long periods on minimal water. This is an ideal solution where food production is difficult, especially in remote, desolate areas and disaster recovery zones.”
There are many adverse effects occurring on our agriculture, and most are a direct consequence of our own existence. We can no longer uphold the growing population without a sustainable solution. Re-engineering the science of vegetable crop production, Infinite Harvest provides solutions through its innovative agricultural systems, based on vertical farming. Infinite Harvest is a culmination of technology, understanding, and balance to produce healthier food in limitless amounts with nearly zero to no adverse impact to the environment, enabling crops to grow indefinitely while benefiting the environment. Seeing itself as a steward of the earth, Infinite Harvest strives to produce sustainable food crops, while benefiting our health, the soil we walk on, the water we drink, and the air we breathe. Beacon Youth and Family Center Closes its Doors
Englewood, Colorado -- After 42 years of providing mental health care services to children and families in the Denver community, Beacon Youth and Family Center will close its doors and cease operation on April 30, 2011.
Beacon Center has built a legacy on providing comprehensive mental health treatment for children and families. Services have included residential care, crisis care, hospital diversion, hospital step-down, drug and alcohol treatment, community based therapy, respite care and day treatment. Since its inception in 1969, Beacon Center has provided these vital services to over 15,000 children and their families.
"It has been an honor for Beacon Center to have served so many Colorado children and families over the years. We believe in our mission, and sincerely hope that the demise of our programs doesn't mean kids don't have access to treatment. It has also been a privilege to work with so many remarkable people who share our commitment -- staff, board members, Cherish the Children Guild, donors, and members of the community who have given of themselves to support our children's mental health needs," said Michael Guthrie, Executive Director.
Unfortunately, many factors have contributed to the difficult decision for Beacon Center to close. A dramatic decrease in referrals for the mid-level (non-locked, non-restraint) care that Beacon Center provides played a significant role in this decision. With smaller budgets for counties, state and federal government, and other referral sources, this level of care is simply not being utilized at its capacity. This decline in referrals has led to a steady decline in revenue.
The President of Beacon Center's Board of Directors, Georgianna Contiguglia, stated "We recognize that Beacon Center is just a small piece of a much larger story. The fact is, the huge drop in referrals to programs like ours is not because all the kids got well. We are surrounded by evidence of the needs for mental health care, yet agencies like Beacon Center continue to close in Colorado. Clearly, there are bigger economic issues at play, and I am heartbroken that we, as a society, are not willing or able to support the treatment needs of our own children. My hope is that our decision as a society to provide needed care for those with mental illnesses doesn't happen after all the capacity has disappeared." As the need for mental health care continues to exist, so does the need for education, advocacy and accessibility to services.
Beacon Center has received support over the years from many committed foundations and individuals. We are most grateful to the Cherish the Children Guild, an auxiliary of Beacon Center was chartered in 1999 to raise funds necessary to allow us to serve families in need. Guild Founder and President Emeritus, Annabel Bowlen, along with many other dedicated supporters have raised millions of dollars over the years at the annual Cherish the Children Gala.
"It brings great sadness to me and the members of the Cherish the Children Guild that the Beacon Center will no longer be able to continue the wonderful work that they have done for the last 40 years. They have reached out and given special love and care to numerous adolescents and their families. They have also been a source of strength to many. I would like to thank the members of the Guild for the tremendous work, love and care they have given to this amazing charity. The Beacon Center will always have a special place in my heart, as well as, the many Guild members who dedicated their time and incredible efforts," said Annabel Bowlen, Cherish the Children Guild Founder.
